Between the Years

By Daniel Hoard

All these years have made me older.
Distant eyes that stare back colder.
The memories of the moment own the past.
Sleepless nights I spent without you.
Sacred ties we had to undo.
And every breath brings me closer to my last.
Since the cradle I've been fighting.
See my scars in songs I'm writing.
Just a carcass ever searching for a soul.
All the seasons that I've stood through.
All the dreams that never came true.
Like the guilty, they have rung their final toll.
Through the sands of time on my own.
Hidden truth in seeds that I've sown
proves the road to hell is paved with good intent.
Like the shadow ever stalking,
in my head that won't stop talking,
woven in the letters I have never sent.

So smash the frik'en hourglass.
Forget the dreams lost to the past.
Living for the moment, you're the cast.
There's just one thing I want to do.
It's spend another night with you.
One more promise, lady, make it true.
Just you and me, we'll take the night.
You're all I see, locked in my sight.
It's how your skin reflects candlelight.
The distance in your eyes I see,
that road to hell that's haunting me,
perplexity to my felicity.
Tonight we're taking dusk till dawn.
The fire inside still burning on
until the day has come when it's gone.
To hear my words, you'll know I'm torn.
My scars and crimson do adorn.
The stoic I've become was stillborn.
A breath of life, my only prayer,
like endless summer nights we'd share
or a soft autumn breeze through your hair.
So smash the hourglass, that's fine,
and push it past the borderline.
Take it to the limit one more time.

In this life, we all learn lessons,
constant trials and confessions.
We win the game if we ever touch the sky.
Deciphering the right from wrong,
the born again keep trudging on.
We will always miss the mark if we don't try.
There are some wounds that never heal.
This bleeding love is very real.

But if love's an act, you will only play the fool.
I like it rough; let crimson run.
It's better than it being numb.
And on this stage, you will need no acting school.
It's always raining in my head.
Forget the things I should have said.
You were the only breath of life I ever knew.
It's love and hate, it's sex and pain.
A stoic knows they're all the same.
It's the different shades of grey that I've lived through.

So smash the frik'en hourglass.
Step on the stage, forget the past.
Get lost in the moment, make it last.
There's just one thing I want to do.
It's dedicate the night to you.
One more promise, lady, make it true.
Just you and me and all damn night.
Your skin reflecting candlelight
until the morning sun takes its flight.
Look in my eyes and you will see
nostalgia lost to history.
Just one touch will solve the mystery.
Like when the night submits to dawn,
the fire inside keeps raging on
until the day has come when it's gone.
Within these seeds, the truth is sown.
Beneath the branches once called home,
under wandering stars where I roam.
Those endless summer nights we'd share,
where spirits run without a care,
pure like snow-filled skies and very rare.
So smash the hourglass, that's fine.
Just one more riddle, one more rhyme.
The stage belongs to you one more time.

And when the day has come, arise
a new shade of grey in our lives,
as close as the Holy Ghost is, me and you.
The stars collide when we're alone,
a symphony with perfect tone,
like the feeling of a song you know is true.
Remember well our last goodbye.
You played your ace and I was high,
and the little ears that listened as we'd fight.
Your final act, and so moved on.
I took a shot and wrote a song,
and the lonely road of faith was every night.
I heard your whispers from his bed,
like piercing echoes in my head,
and the deepest cuts inside me, they still bleed.
It stole that very breath of life,
carved out my soul just like a knife,
and smeared crimson through my words for those who heed.
That was the year that I once died.
Some would say it was suicide.
One final shot and I'll leave this world behind.
I didn't write this song for you.
It's just the stuff my head goes through.
But that once upon a time's not hard to find.
Like seconds ticking out the clock,
my thoughts are never-ending talk,
and this is a fleeting glimpse of what they say.
But now the stranger in my bed
auditions to be in my head,
and maybe I'll write her song another day.
Tonight, it's only you I need,
just like the wound that needs to bleed,
like a poet needs the pain, those words we feel.
So let the stars collide above.
We'll take the night, define the love.
An illusion must surrender to what's real.
It's written clearly on my stone,
that once upon a time I've known.
It's your dagger buried deep between each year.
That breath of life up till my last,
between the years, present and past,
it's the love I took with me, I hold so dear.

So smash the frik'en hourglass.
Until it ends, let's make it last.
Rock this stage once more, forget the past.
There's just one thing I've left to do.
It's dedicate the night to you.
One more promise, lady, make it true.
Until the morning takes the night,
you're ethereal in my sight.
It's how your face reflects candlelight.
The distance in your eyes I see,
that road to hell that's haunting me.
Till we touch, then it's epiphany.
I had a vision I held deep.
Through sands of time, what's pure I keep.
Angels were holding you while you sleep.
As heaven held you, I stood by
and witnessed heaven's angels cry,
enchanting the surreal, touch the sky.
Between hell's road and faith I'll be.
From one blink to the next I see
staggering of my reality.
Like when the night submits to dawn,
stokes the fire and rages on.
My words play déjà vu when I'm gone.
Those endless summer nights we'd share,
the autumn breeze all through your hair.
Living breath of life, you were my air.
So buck the hourglass, that's fine.
No sacrifice of yours or mine.
Cut the wound wide open one more time.
